I Feel Like I Am Cheating

I was a Telecaster man for a long time. Then way back I acquired an Agile. Long story short that lead me to being a Les Paul guy. I got myself a Les Paul with P90's and the rest was history as they say. I have had several including a Studio with P90's that @uwmcscott has now but eventually settled on the 60's Tribute as my favorite. I think I bonded so tightly with a Les Paul because of the scale. Then with the 60's Tribute for the weight relief.

Now for the cheating part. The last two gigs I have not even had a Les Paul with me. I have taken the SG Jr with a P90 and a semi-hollow. I really like what I am hearing from both with this band. It seems to fit. I can't help but feeling like I am cheating on my Les Paul. It has been such a part of my playing for so long. When I see pics of the gigs over the last decade it is almost always a Les Paul Goldtop I am playing. I just felt like confessing. Silly I know but it is a slow news day.

That's interesting I have a 2012 lefty Gibson 50s Tribute with P90s and a 70s Tribute with minis from around the same time (the lefty 60s Tributes from back then have humbuckers) and the weight of both is reminescent of those boat anchor Agile ALs. They're both heavier than the 2013 Studios i have. The specs must have changed on those models in subsequent years...

Like an old baseball glove, it will be there when you need it and still fit perfectly.

Seven year itch?
Mid life crisis?
Drifting allegiances ?
Identifying as this, or that, these days...its all become so fickle.
I'm sure not going to judge you. I caught myself looking at Epiphones today.

Always good to "Change Your Underwear" once in a while. :)

Die hard LP guy here but lately have been taking a liking to and playing Strats and Tele
styles with various PUP configs. Jaguars too.

That is hysterical! I am glad I was not drinking something when I read your post, I would have spit all over the place.

I still have the Black studio/P90 @tonebender references, I even remember the first day I found it on Ebay and shared it with Jeff. It was a run of 100 made in 1993 in black with Soapbars (I think they might actually be P100's ), an ebony fretboard and gold hardware. It has a pencil thin 60's style neck and weight about fifteen tons. I do remember geeking out over various LP's with Jeff that we used to find and others here so I very much understand what you are getting at with the "cheating" concept.

@tobijohn , I don't think the specs changed so much as that wood just varies wildly from guitar to guitar. Certainly the are more selective on the custom shop stuff, but even there you see some heavy ones from time to time

@uwmcscott I do remember that neck being especially thin on that LP. It was a smooth player with that ebony board. Do you still have the Goldtop Trad Pro? I still have the black Trad Pro. It is one of my favorite playing guitars of all time but it sure is heavy. You know with all my renewed energy after the stent and weight loss I feel so good that maybe I should break out that beast and give it a workout tomorrow night at rehearsal.

I do not have the TradPro anymore, but it did stay in the family as it went to my brother and he was using it in a church band for a while. That was a very interesting model - just came in the black and goldtop and the 2 different neck profiles. And yes it was a heavy guitar, but i did really like the satin finish on the back/neck.

I remember now that your brother ended up with it. I weighed my Trad Pro last evening out of curiosity and it is bumping 10 lbs. I played it a little and I immediately knew why I liked it so much. It just feels perfect to me. I think I may take it rehearsal tonight. That will make me feel better about cheating at the gigs.

You may stray, but you'll always come back to your Les Paul's.

I felt similar when I started playing my gibson scales after a 25 yr relationship to a stripped maple neck usa strat. Then my casino coupe for a few years. Then mostly acoustic with my sg for electric work. Now a tele for a bit. I wonder when it's the strats turn again?
