Director of "The Commitments", maybe the first and probably one of the very few movies to capture the reality of forming (and losing) a band.
When Benny Goodman's brother was asked about the accuracy of the bio-pic, he is supposed to have said something along the lines of "The only thing they got right was the number on the mailbox …"

Alan Parker did some good work. People forget that he did The Wall. Also: Birdy, Angel Heart, Evita, Mississippi Burning, Fame, Midnight Express, etc etc.
RIP

As said above, The Commitments really does capture the essence of being in a band - the arc, the highs, the lows (per my experience anyway).

The Commitments was an amazing flick with fantastic music & musical performances. Parker always seemed to get the best out of people and had a great eye for both 'grit' and realism. My personal favourite of his was Angel Heart which really should have been a bigger (read 'More successful at the Box Office') hit.
Great movie. The tension created at the beginning when he was trying to smuggle the drugs on the plane with the exaggerated beating of his heart was something else. Mississippi Burning was great too.
