I already knew that when Mike Eldred left, he didn't really have someone at Fender who would collaborate with him the way Paul at PRS does. He framed it differently so that you had to read between the lines about the Mike part, but hear he explicitly says it:

Farking primadona artists!
ROFLMAO!
I guess you know something I don't?
The only other story I ever heard, not mentioned by John himself, was that Fender was pushing endorsement contracts where Fender endorsees could only play Fenders. I've never seen anyone confirm this, but there's nothing to say that he couldn't have made more than one reason.

I used to be a fan of JM until I went to a concert and he totally rearranged EVERY song we were familiar with and played a bunch of songs that went nowhere. I get the whole artiste thing but when your fans shell out hard earned bucks to see and hear songs that got you where you are...don't throw that out the window cause you ain't feeling it. Musicians want the adoration and success and then they become weenie whiners. I imagine playing the same songs the same way repeatedly can be very tiring but it comes with the gig.
