Lately, I've been thinning the herd and getting rid of guitars that I just don't play... I sold my Agile 3100MCC last weekend, and I've been thinking about also putting my Squier VM '72 Tele Custom up for sale.

TChoriz.JPG

This is a textbook case of buyer's remorse begetting buyer's remorse. A couple of years ago, some of you might remember I became obsessed with the latest, updated Epiphone Sheratons, until I bought one from Sweetwater and it was so heavy it gave me muscle spasms in my back when I played it standing up. So I exchanged it for the Tele Custom (the next guitar down on my GAS list). I had played them and I knew the fake WRHB in the neck position sounded like shite, but I already had a pickup in mind to replace it with (Brandonwound), and I figured I'd give the stock "Duncan Designed" bridge pickup a chance, but I ended up replacing it with a pickup from an American Standard Tele that I happened to have. I believe Seymour's ex-wife when she says that the Korean made Duncan Designed pickups are identical in specs and construction to the American-made pickups they're modeled after, but I've never even tried an American SD pickup that I've liked. And I've had quite a few... Both bass and guitar pickups. I've often found GFS to be an improvement over SD. :P

Anyway, the Brandonwound sounds awesome! A very exciting pickup! And I'm not going to entertain any debates over CuNiFe magnets and how it can't possibly sound like the original WRHBs, because I don't care. I was three years old when the originals came out, and I've never played a vintage one in real life, so I have absolutely zero frame of reference, and I won't lay awake at night feeling inferior because it's not "authentic" enough for internet snobs. All I care about is that it sounds GOOD. And this pickup does. Unfortunately, that's the only thing about this guitar that sounds good. Once again, this reinforces my belief that humbuckers and single-coils are just not a good combination. The Fender pickup in the bridge sounds good by itself (though weaker sounding when compared to the WRHB), but I rarely solo the bridge pickup, and the two don't sound good together at all.

I don't like one-trick-pony guitars, so I've been thinking about selling it and keeping the pickups and upgrades for another project (preferably involving another Brandonwound), but then again, I like the neck. It's girthy. Probably slightly chunkier than my Furrian (my favorite neck profile of all my Teles), but it's not a baseball bat either.

It also has some crazy grain and figuring on the fretboard...

neck grain.JPG

...and it's a one-piece neck so it continues around the back of the neck:

back figure.JPG

So then I thought; maybe I should get another Brandonwound pickup for the bridge position, and basically convert it to a Tele "Deluxe"? Of course, I'll have to get a Deluxe PG that surrounds the bridge pickup and a hard-tail bridge, but I think it can be done without anything looking amiss, except it will say "Custom" on the headstock instead of "Deluxe" :) :

TC headstock.JPG

My other option is to part it out, keeping the neck and all the upgrade parts and sell the body loaded with the stock parts. Then get a Tele Deluxe body and another Brandonwound for the bridge position. I can't say I'm 100% thrilled with this body. It's made of Basswood, which, that in itself I don't care about too much, except that it dings easily, but I think they used too many pieces of wood of multiple sizes and shades for a trans finish. I particularly never cared for this one, thin piece of darker wood:

strip block.JPG

I have thought about painting this a solid color in the past, but painting is a drag. If I got an unfinished body, I could do a dye finish, and that's more fun than painting.

Part of me wants to just sell it and have done with it, but I'll probably never get the idea of a Tele Deluxe out of my head for as long as I have this pickup. I just don't know if I want to add another project to my list, and I know that once I start down a rabbit hole, I'll probably just keep on going all the way.

Another part of me probably just wants an excuse to buy a Tele Deluxe!

While I like the idea of modding/converting, I find that my projects sit so long waiting for me to complete them, they never get finished.

That’s why I voted to sell and buy what you want. :D

Sell it minus best parts. Build your own.
Contact Woodtech Routing LLC and ask them to tap test their stock of blanks
for wide tonal range and cut you a new body, or get a precut body. They seem like Amish country guys. Very nice to deal with. I got 3 great Strat bodies from them. Use only a few coats of Tru Oil to replicate light finish...no thick armor for liveliest tone.

I'll use Allparts for necks, now. Etc, etc..

Well, it's no wonder, how heavy is that ACCORDION?

I'd just sell it and get what you want. It's easier to sell as a complete guitar, you part it out it just takes time... like Spike said, and it's the same for me, I got so many guitar projects seems like they sit around as guitar projects forever.

Not to mention, you didn't like the color. Wouldn't it be fun to go shop for another guitar with the color you want!

Haha... At the time I played the accordion (8 - 10 years old), I think the instrument almost outweighed me! I've been averse to heavy instruments ever since!

Yeah, I never turn to the internet to tell me what I want (and I'll do what I want regardless of the poll results), but I like conversation, and fresh content is good for the forum's SEO. It reminds me of the kind of stuff we used to talk about when you could hang out in a mom and pop guitar shop and shoot the shit on a Saturday afternoon. I miss those days.

I don't have a problem with the color. I wanted a 3TS finish when I ordered it. It's the multiple pieces of mismatched wood that put me off. I was just too impulsive when I bought this thing. I was disappointed in the Sheraton, and I wanted something to take its place.

I have some regular CNC guys that I usually deal with for custom-made bodies, but it's always good to have another source. Thanks!
Unfinished Allparts necks from the Stratosphere have been my top choice for a few years now. Have you noticed their prices have gone up since the Covid outbreak? No more $109 unfinished necks. They're $129 and up now.

Yeah, I need another project like I need another hole in my pants. I've got the Sun King Strat build, a baritone build (which I haven't even mentioned yet), a Tele build, I've also got to weight-relieve the Harley Benton bass (and possibly do a dye finish on it), and my 12-string Thinline Tele needs some more work done before I can really call that guitar "finished". Probably enough to keep me busy for another year, if I wasn't also lazy, and didn't only work on projects when I felt like it.

I did not notice the price jump. I luckily bought 4 Allpart's Strat necks at the 109 price. Along with covid, Nagano, the city they make necks in, got massively flooded back in October and again this July. Best wishes on your tele.

In defense of basswood, Jeff Becks white Strat is made of it. I think he still plays it as #1.

Since you already love the neck PU and neck, I guess that selling the body and getting another one would be a good option for you.

If I was in your shoes - but being me -, I´d go for the first option, though :D

Eddie Van Halen seems to prefer basswood too, and Ibanez uses basswood for even high-end guitars, but the finishes are very thick on those. Basswood gets a bad rap, but it is kinda soft, and it's kinda plain looking, and doesn't take stain or dye very well, so it's strictly a paint-grade wood in my opinion. It wouldn't be my first choice, but it (obviously) wouldn't dissuade me from buying a guitar if I liked it enough.

That's kinda the direction I'm leaning, but I took a look around, and there's not a whole lot of options out there right now. All I see is the current Classic Vibe '70s Deluxe, in any color I want (as long as it's black or white) for $450, and I'm not interested in spending even that much, especially for a boring looking guitar.

I've been hearing a lot about this supposed guitar scarcity that's going on due to the Corona virus. Apparently, people have been buying up guitars like crazy, and the manufacturers are unable to operate at full capacity. Looking at the used selections on ebay, Reverb and GC Used, pickings do seem to be pretty slim.

For that matter, does anybody know of anyone else who makes a Tele Deluxe-type guitar beside Fender/Squier that accommodates Wide Range Humbuckers? I know I've seen some Deluxe-type copies, but I can't think of any brand names off the top of my head, and they usually have regular PAF style humbuckers in them.

Probably you´ve already considered it - or discarded -: Rondo´s Furrian? Maybe you could repaint the body and have it as you like it. Do you prefer a fixed bridge? I have always liked those, except for the 21 frets neck.

I didn't know that there was a Furrian version of that guitar. I almost corrected you, but I ducked over to the Rondo site and sure enough, they have both the Hadean, and SX versions (I wish the Furrian at least came in a different color).

If there are big enough routs under the pickguard it might work, but this would feel like buying a guitar just because it's there, and I happen to have some extra money... That can only lead to more buyer's remorse.

I'm just going to sell the guitar and sit on the pickups and bridge until something comes along that inspires me. I'm pretty content with what I have. No need to go looking for something to want.

I looked them up... Their work looks legit, and for what it is, that's a good price (the lowest I saw was $385, I think). You'd expect to pay at least that just for the finish and relic work, if not more. But that's more money than I feel comfortable spending on a body. I usually have unfinished bodies made to my specs for about $150, or I get a finished, parted out body for about the same, or a little more. If I was into relics, though, I'd definitely hit those guys up.

Sell it and sit on the pickups.

I bought 2 MJT bodies off eBay both for $200 + shipping at auction. One fiesta red strat and one blue Tele. Both great. Be patient
