Can just replacing the strings cause fret buzz? I bought a new Schechter C-1 Platinum with some really cruddy strings, so I replaced them with some new Elixir's, the same size as far as know, now there's a fret buzz when I'm in the open position, especially on the lower strings, that wasn't there before. I don't think I accidentally lowered the action any. All I did was polish the frets and put on new strings.

Any suggestions?

Different strings may have different tension than existing set, even same gauge. If this is only happening near the lower strings maybe a slight tweak of the truss rod counterclockwise might do it.

If it's on the open strings, it is the nut. So the strings have to be smaller and dropped lower in the slots.

I just meant the first (open) position. Actually, It’s when I fret the low e, a, and d strings anywhere from 1-8. Higher than 8 the buzz goes away. I don’t want to raise the action anymore than it is. It still has some relief, will adjusting the truss rod help?

so I adjusted the truss rod a half a turn! and that got rid of it. I can't believe just a change of strings (same gauge, nearly identical tensions) caused that big of a change.

That brand of strings must have been exerting less overall forward bow tension on the neck than what it had been set up for with the previous brand. This really highlights what a delicate balancing act there is between string tension and truss rod counter force.

Now that I think about it, I don't know what strings came on it from GC, they weren't D'Addario's like I was thinking, they had all brass ball ends, so who knows what kind of junk were on it!
