Ok, so since you took the clickbait, I owe you some amusement

I ordered a used Squier Jazzmaster and the person who owned it had no idea about how to use vintage-style tuners, or, for that matter, anything about restringing. The good news is that it has very little fret wear.

Yeah. Even after I'd be stringing guitars for years (mostly with locking tuners) the first time I tried split shaft it looked a bit like this.

We all had our moments, it's learning. I'm certain that I did stuff like that too, on any tuner. Then I took my guitar for a setup (and threw in a pack of new strings). And I noticed how cleanly the tech did it, so that was my goal ever since. I think I even asked him about how to do it. Nice guy at SamAsh, I nicknamed him "Stradivarius".

The difference is that today (and for the last umpteen years) there's this thing called "Internet" where all sorts of useful information can be found, including pictorial and video It truly astounds me, approximately since "generation iPod", how people who are always "online" never think about using this "online" thingy to learn.

I am convinced that some people think that guitar strings are the length they are because you're supposed to use up that whole length.

I do agree with you about the internet and the wealth of documentation we have now. I remember hearing once a possibly apocryphal story about how in their early days the Beatles heard about a guy who knew how to play the such-and-such chord and made a pilgrimage to go see him so they could learn it. Compare that to the instant access to information we have now! Then again, I can watch a hundred videos on soldering and still make a mess of it, so...

Wait...you guys mean to tell me that the strings are replaceable and that you don't just buy a new guitar whenever they get dull?

No, I think you are supposed to wait until one (or more) string breaks then you sell it on CL and buy a new one.

That's not apocryphal at all! I watched some documentaries recently and Paul told this story in an interview. So it's not apocryphal (although not necessarily true, he-he, but hopefully he wasn't making it up). I think it was the open B7 chord.

Don't get me started on soldering - it looks so easy until you realize you don't have 3 hands. I might end up buying one of those "helping hand" gizmos. But hey, it's not like we don't know, in my case I just have 2 non-dominant hands when it comes to soldering
